German Two-Handed Broadsword.

An exceptional example of a massive two-handed German sword (Zweihänder), measuring approximately 71-inches overall with a 54-inch blade fitted with prominent parrying hooks (Parierhaken). The blade is complemented by a monumental 22-inch guard, decorated with a bold primitive motif. The guard terminates in large rolled coil finials, with additional rolled coil embellishments along the sides near the ends, giving the piece an especially dramatic profile. Knuckle guards and side rings are incorporated into the guard as well, lending additional intricacy and a commanding presence to the piece. The long grip is wrapped in leather with raised partitions, leading to a simple iron pommel cap of functional form. Subtle engraved cross-pattern grooves appear on the guard, their meaning uncertain but visually striking.

Note: Such colossal swords were never intended for conventional sheaths, but were carried slung over the shoulder in the manner of a halberd. For comparable examples, see Stone's Glossary of the Construction, Decoration and Use of Arms and Armor.

Condition: Very good for its age and configuration, with a mottled grey patina overall, showing scattered age wear and pitting. The leather grip exhibits loss, cracking and areas of discoloration consistent with long service and age. Guard is a bit wobbly.
