Falchion, 16th Century. The falchion is an imposing and impressive weapon. The sword is 37 3/8 inches long from tip to pommel. It has a 31 ½ front edge and 8 inch long raised sharpened yalman on its curved blade, and a point of balance 5 9/16ths from the crossguard: this sword is meant for cutting. The blade has two narrow fullers, the back one longer than the front. Its 8 3/8 inch crossguard has a flaring protective nagel on its right side to defend the wielder's hand. The grip has a recess for the pointer finger, and still has what appears to be its original leather grip in good condition for its age. The blade has some light decorations: a repeating eyelash pattern is stamped or etched into the blade running parallel to the fullers. Cutting swords such as this were common sidearms to many of the man-at-arms and professional soldiers class who developed through the Renaissance era, and this one has some wear and nicks in the edge of the blade.
Condition: Good. Some spots and pitting on metal and wear on leather, but has its original leather grip. Some spots of rust on handle. Crossguard is loose and rattles, but sword and grip are solid. Some wear on edge.
