DescriptionJohn F. Kennedy: An Important Frank Sinatra Gift Item from the January 20, 1961, Inauguration. These sterling silver cigarette boxes were given as personal favors by Frank Sinatra, who was Entertainment Chairman for the Inaugural Gala. Their selection as an Inaugural favor reflects the attitude of the time; today it would be unthinkable to choose a smoking-related item for such a purpose! The recipient of this particular box is unknown, however similar examples have appeared in the estate auctions of Bette Davis and Tony Curtis (the latter box selling for some $7000, despite what appeared to be scuffing and discoloration on the lid).
The design was taken from the official Inaugural invitation, and features at the top a seal with the U.S. Capitol building and an eagle with a streamer in his mouth reading "Kennedy/ Johnson," the same design found on the official Inaugural badges. The box has a hinged lid, and is marked on the underside "Sterling by Poole 77." Possibly the number 77 might serve to identify the recipient of this box, a subject worthy of further research. It measures 6.25" x 3.25" x 1.5". Minor polishing marks on the surface, along with several parallel fine scratches.
