Description:
McClellan & Pendleton: Gorgeous Ferrotype Jugate. After selling the Lincoln & Johnson ferrotype jugate in our last sale for over $50,000, we were at a momentary loss as to how we could "follow that act." Providence has smiled upon us, and we now offer the even rarer mate for McClellan & Pendleton. The rarest major party jugates are, and always have been, the Lincoln and McClellan pieces from 1864. There are probably no more than 6 or 7 of the Lincoln-Johnson's in existence and perhaps 4 or 5 of the McClellan-Pendleton's. Most collectors are resigned to the fact that they will never own one. The reason for their rarity is puzzling, as jugates from the prior election of 1860 are, for the most part, readily available. We assume that their production was labor intensive and that the manufacturer either couldn't keep up with the orders or discontinued production in favor of other designs that could quickly be cranked out at lower cost. The example we offer is 1 1/4" x 1 1/4" and has the original red and blue paint highlights. It also has the T-bar pin attachment on the verso, but lacks the securing loop. The portraits are "blazers"... bold with great contrast and focus. The emulsion surfaces are smooth and glossy, with no chipping or blistering. Superb is an adjective that comes to mind. Besides not being able to own it ourselves, our only regret is that there can be but one winner on this choice rarity.
