Description:
Great C. 1880s Albumen Photographic View Of Fort Laramie 8" X 11" albumen view fine, just some minor toning/foxing in the sky, else about perfect. On the original 8 5/8" X 11 1/2" mount with photographer's logo at the bottom, "Howard / Photo.". The margins of the mount have been trimmed but the image appears to retain its original size. Period ink script ID on verso "Wyoming". Although the image is identified in pencil on the verso as Fort Phil Kearney, careful examination of the image provides compelling evidence that it is, in fact, Fort Laramie. Fort Laramie was located on the North Platte River at the mouth of the Laramie River. The fort was an important staging point for several military excursions during the Indian War period. A very rare western image.
