Description:
Important Ulrich-Engraved Model 1895 Deluxe Winchester Sporting Rifle, Serial number 88418, Presented by Theodore Roosevelt to a Rancher. This superb rifle was part of the legendary James S. Fowler Winchester collection, and was owned by him when published by R. L. Wilson in the 1971 edition of Antique Arms Annual. When Fowler's collection was auctioned in the early 1970s this gun was bought by a well-known firearms dealer Greg Martin. Since then it passed through one intermediate owner before becoming part of the current consignor's collection.

Recently, Larry Wilson has authored a detailed letter of expertise on the rifle, which is presented in its entirety with the website description of this lot. Interested bidders are encouraged to read this detailed discussion. In his letter Wilson, considered the leading expert on Teddy Roosevelt firearms, expressed his desire to publish this Winchester in the next edition of his standard reference book Theodore Roosevelt Hunter-Conservationist.

The detailed engraving and rich gold inlay are unsigned, but in his letter R. L. Wilson conclusively attributes them to Ulrich. The gun displays beautifully, having been professionally refinished some time prior to its publication in 1971. It is a lovely example of a much sought-after Type, made all the more special because of its TR connection.
