Included with this lot is an original 8.5" x 11" letter on NASA Space Task Group, Langley Field, Virginia, letterhead, dated May 31, 1961. It reads, in full:
"This is to certify that the four (4) one dollar bills, Serial Numbers T33094330A, A52804224A, Y59306162A, Y16506177A, were installed and flew in free world's first Manned Space Flight 'Freedom 7'. This flight was made by Commander Alan B. Shepard, Jr. from Cape Canaveral, Florida on May 5, 1961. These bills were installed inside the Capsule on the launch pad prior to launch and were removed after the Capsule was recovered and returned to Cape Canaveral."
It is signed at the close by: "Alan B. Shepard Jr" as Pilot; "Robert A. Graham" as Systems Engineer; and "Samuel T. Beddingfield" as Weight & Balance Engineer.
There has long been anecdotal evidence for currency having flown on Freedom 7 with Shepard. This would seem to pin down the number of official bills flown as well as their serial numbers. We are not aware of the location of the other three bills in this exclusive group. This is one of the rarest and most exciting Space relics we've had the privilege to offer. It should appeal to Space and Currency collectors alike. An opportunity not to be missed.
