Description:
"...within this painting are actual particles of the space ship I flew to the moon... and minute amounts of moon dust..."
Alan Bean Original 1993 Painting "Cernan And His Rover," Textured Acrylic on Masonite. An awesome and dramatic original painting by moonwalker Alan Bean; you may have seen this on display at the Cosmosphere in recent years (see below). The painting is 18" x 14" and is elaborately framed, museum quality, to an overall 25" x 22". The image is of Gene Cernan standing on the moon between the U.S. flag and the Lunar Rover. Bean explains the background in a plaque on the verso, in full: "Apollo Astronaut Eugene Cernan seems to be enjoying the view. And, what a view it is, with magnificent towering mountains in every direction. Gene and his pal Jack Schmitt landed in the Taurus-Littrow Valley yesterday and are in the middle of a tightly packed 3-day exploration. The area was a treasure of information just waiting to be sampled. Gene would later say, 'No matter where we might be, we could always spend more time and learn more.' But other equally interesting sites awaited their visit. Realizing that the most effective use of their limited stay time on the Moon was to maximize their time exploring a specific site on foot and minimize driving time from site to site in their lunar rover, Gene reported, 'Even though we were never able to really go in a straight line very long because of boulders, craters, and other terrain features, I drove the rover full out the majority of the time, at speeds up to 18 kilometers per hour (about 11 miles per hour). I used 4-wheel drive and fore and aft steering and found that controllability was excellent but very sensitive'. The rover was an extremely lightweight electric car that did its job perfectly. It carried Gene and Jack, their tools and the samples they collected a total of 21 miles during their 3 EVAs. It also supported a remotely controlled television camera that allowed us back here on planet Earth to experience firsthand the exploration of a distant world." Also on the verso is information on the care of this fine piece of art and an explanation of his techniques and materials including an explanation of his use of Apollo 12 flown materials mixed in with the texturizing compound. Excellent condition.

Included with this lot is a letter from the Cosmosphere dated February 7, 2013. It reads as follows: "The 'Cernan and His Rover' painting by Alan Bean has been on loan to the Kansas Cosmosphere and Space Center since June 2007... The painting has been on display in various areas of our museum since its arrival here until last week when it was removed for shipment per the lender's request. Since April 2010, 'Cernan and His Rover' has been on display in the Kansas Cosmosphere's Hall of Space museum's Lunar Surface exhibit. The Cosmosphere is grateful for the opportunity to have displayed Alan Bean's artwork in our museum for over 5 years. We hope the future owner of the artwork appreciates the history and beauty Mr. Bean created in his artwork./ Meredith J. Miller/ Director of Collections"
