Description:
One of 200 Signed Copies of Fahrenheit 451 in the Rare Asbestos Binding, a Presentation Copy Warmly Inscribed by Bradbury to Novelist and Screenwriter Richard Matheson and His Wife
Ray Bradbury. Fahrenheit 451. New York: Ballantine Books, Inc., [1953]. First edition. One of 200 copies copies signed by the author on the limitation page (copy number 42). Presentation copy, inscribed by Bradbury on the front free endpaper to science fiction and horror novelist Richard Matheson and his wife: "For Dick - and / For Ruth- / (who is wonderful.) / Remembering Happy / evenings - and / anticipating many / more - from / their loving / friend- / Ray Bradbury / June 18, 1954." Octavo. 199 pages. Illustrated by Joe Mugnaini. Specially bound in cream Johns-Manville Quinterra, a chrysolite asbestos material, with red titles on the front cover and spine (Currey binding D [no priority]). No dust jacket (as issued). Also includes the stories "The Playground" and "And the Rock Cried Out". Some wear and soiling to binding, front joint has a tear near the bottom, text a bit toned. Still, very good.

[Together with:] Ray Bradbury. Typed Note Signed. [N.p., n.d., ca. 1970's]. On humorous stationery. Approximately 8.75 x 5.5 inches. "Ruthy! Richard! Thanks for a jolly, Delicious Evening with Good Company and Fine Talk...! Deeply Appreciated by Old Igor's Friend and Friend to Quasimodo Himself Love, Ray ["Ray" signed in blue marker]". At the bottom, Bradbury has written in blue marker: "Bradbury! [with an arrow pointing to a printed cartoon of a mummy] All wrapped for shipping!" Two horizontal creases, else fine. An excellent association copy, from one legendary author to another.

Richard Matheson (b. 1926) is one of the most prolific and honored authors in the science fiction, fantasy, and horror genres. Some of his novels include I Am Legend (1954), The Shrinking Man (1956), A Stir of Echoes (1959), and What Dreams May Come (1978), all of which have been made into films. He also wrote fourteen episodes of The Twilight Zone (including Nightmare at 20,000 Feet, one of the most famous episodes), and one episode of the original Star Trek series (The Enemy Within). Matheson is a hugely influential writer, inspiring such artists as Stephen King, George A. Romero, and Anne Rice. He was inducted into the Science Fiction Hall of Fame in 2010 and was awarded the World Fantasy Award for Lifetime Achievement in 1984. He married his wife Ruth (née Woodson) in 1952.
