[John F. Kennedy Assassination] Warren Commission Report Signed by All Seven Commission Members. including Chairman Earl Warren, plus the General Counsel, four Assistant Counsel members, two staff members, and thirty-three aides - forty-seven signatures in all. After the Warren Commission had investigated the assassination of President Kennedy, they presented their conclusions to President Lyndon Johnson in this 888-page report about Lee Harvey Oswald, Jack Ruby, and the possibility that there was some kind of conspiracy. The report, bound in blue cloth with the presidential seal in gilt lettering on the front board, is officially entitled Report of the President's Commission on the Assassination of President John F. Kennedy (Washington, D.C.: Government Printing Office, 1964).While riding through the streets of Dallas in the topless presidential limousine at 12:30 p.m. on November 22, 1963, the forty-six-year-old President Kenney, sitting beside Jacqueline, was shot by two bullets. He was pronounced dead at a Dallas hospital thirty minutes later. Lee Harvey Oswald was arrested one hour later, but the situation became complicated when Jack Ruby, armed with a Colt Cobra .38 Special, shot and killed Oswald in the basement of the Dallas Police Headquarters on November 24. Needing answers, President Johnson established the Warren Commission on November 29 to "evaluate all the facts and circumstances surrounding the assassination and the subsequent killing of the alleged assassin and to report its findings and conclusions to him [page ix]."
Earl Warren, the influential chief justice of the Supreme Court, reluctantly served as the chairman of the seven-member Commission. He quickly saw that the Commission needed help with witnesses and evidence, so J. Lee Rankin was appointed as the Commission's general counsel. Rankin was aided by fourteen assistant counsel members (Rankin and four of those assistance counsel members have signed this book). But more help was needed, so lawyers, historians, and other professionals were assigned as staff members (two have signed this report). Additional aides - lawyers, secretaries, clerks - were also used (thirty-three have signed this copy).
During the extensive investigation, 552 witnesses were questioned and 3,100 exhibits were viewed. On several occasions, commission members travelled to Dallas to visit the scene of the assassination. Finally, after the lengthy hearings had been held, this final report was presented to President Johnson on September 24, 1964, and then to the public on September 27. In the conclusion, all seven Commission members agreed that all shots that hit the president and Governor John Connally "were fired by Lee Harvey Oswald [page 18]," and that Jack Ruby "entered the basement of the Dallas Police Department shortly after 11:17 a.m. and killed Lee Harvey Oswald at 11:21 a.m. [page 21]." The Commission also found "no evidence that either Lee Harvey Oswald or Jack Ruby were part of any conspiracy, domestic or foreign, to assassinate President Kennedy [page 21]." Through the years, these conclusions have been controversial.
This copy of the report was owned by Sadie Hennigan (known also as "Sally Hennigan"), who has signed the final pastedown. Hennigan was one of Chief Justice Warren's secretaries and was active in coordinating witnesses and legal agencies with Chief Justice Warren's office. Soon after she had received this copy, she gathered these forty-seven signatures. It was truly an act of devotion to the work of the committee and the many functionaries that helped make it happen. Sadie had to go from person to person, desk to desk, and ask each one to sign her copy. Some of the greatest political minds of their day took a moment, perhaps with a smile and a bit of conversation, to put their signatures in this singular copy.
The signatures of the members of the Commission include Earl Warren, Richard B. Russell, John Sherman Cooper, Hale Boggs, Gerald R. Ford, Allen W. Dulles, and John J. McCloy. The General Counsel and his assistants who signed are J. Lee Rankin, Samuel A. Stern, Howard P. Willens, Norman Redlich and W. David Slawson. Signatures of the two staff members include Alfred Goldberg and Arthur K. Marmor.
Special aides who signed the report are Jeanne C. Hauer, Adele W. Lippard, Julia T. Eide, Beverly A. Hechman, Suzanne Rolston, Helen Tarko, Betty Jean Compton, Margaret C. Yager, Pearl G. Kamber, Mary Ann Rowcotsky, Josephine Farrar, Carolyn A. Schweinsberg, Vivian N. Johnson, Miriam A. Bottum, Ella M. McCall , Jane W. Peter, M., Francine Davis, Ruth Shirley, Elaine Johnson, Sharon Kegarise, Anne M. Clark, Edward G. Gebo, Alton Howard, Bruce E. Nissley, Earle Saye, Stephen S. Burger, Tom Kelley, Jim Malley, Ned Pierpoint, Stephen R. Goldstein, Thomas R. Hall, Lee H. [?], and Arthur E. Dooley
The book measures 6" x 9.5". The front cover has been bumped along the edge, which has caused some minor damage to the inside hinge. Some uneven toning exists on the first blank page.
Also included is a memorial prayer card for President Kennedy reading "Requiescat in Pace" (may he rest in peace), measuring 2.5" x 4.75". Sadie Hennigan received the card at a private funeral service held following the president's death. Throughout the years, she kept the card in this Warren Commission Report.
The consignor of this piece, Army Captain Mark Natale, is a devoted husband and father to two kids, as well as the great-nephew of Sadie Hennigan.
