CLASSIC JAPANESE STIBNITE
Ichinokawa Mine, Ojoinmura, Nii-gori, Iyo Province, Ehime Prefecture, Shikoku Island, Japan
Although a number of excellent Stibnites from various localities have found their way to market in the last few years; the supply of fine Japanese ones from Ichinokawa: the premier world locality, continue to be as scarce as ever. What little material that does appear on the market is entirely dependent on the break-up of old collections. The provenance of this classic specimen could hardly be more illustrative of that phenomenon or more impressive. It was originally acquired by Dr. Tsunashiro Wada; considered by many to be; 'the Father of Japanese Mineralogy', as well as an astute and dedicated collector with a keen eye for outstanding specimens. Dr. Wada was fortunate to be born in 1856, while mining on a serious scale was still taking place in Japan. He was the first Western trained Japanese mineralogist in the country as well as the first Japanese professor of Mineralogy at Tokyo University. He wrote what is still considered to be the standard work on the minerals of Japan, which was published in 1904 and is still in print. It is referred to simply as 'Wada': no other descriptors need be specified. As if this wasn't enough, Prof. Wada managed to find the time and energy to found the Geological Survey of Japan, of which he was the first Director. During his prolific career he assembled what is considered to be the finest collection of Japanese minerals known. Most of the collection has been incorporated into the permanent collection of the Mitsubishi Corporation located on the grounds of the historic Ikuno-Ginzan Silver Mine: a Mitsubishi property that was worked for over 1200 years. Dr. Wada's collection forms the heart of that collection. This specimen was a duplicate from his original collection, traded by Dr. Wada to the Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago early in the last century. The original shipping box, along with Dr. Wada's label is included. It was de-accessioned by the Field in the early 1990's passing through several dealers hands before finding a permanent home with Daniel Trinchillo Sr. a decade or so ago, where it has remained until this time. Rare indeed are the specimens with this level of historical provenance behind them. They tend to surface for only short periods before vanishing into major collections: again. Measuring an impressive 5 x 6 x 12 ½ inches high, it comes with custom labeled base. Ex Field Museum, ex Dr. Tsunashiro Wada collection and bears their respective collection numbers M8210 and 4897.
STIBNITE
Wuling Mine, Qingjiang, Wuning County, Jiujiang Prefecture, Jianxi Province, China
The range of quality exhibited by Chinese Stibnites extends from "ore sample", at one end, to groups such as this one at the other extreme. This specimen is notable for: 1. MULTICOLOR TOURMALINE: "SHARON STONE"
Pederneira Mine, São José da Safira, Minas Gerais, Southeast Region, Brazil
"Sharon Stone" is the nickname that miners at Brazil's famed Pederneira Mine applied to this fantastically aesthetic specimen. Evidently; she made quite an impression in Brazil, among other places. Enough so that, by the time it was purchased by a dealer; the name had already stuck. 'Sharon' was recovered from the first pocket intersected by a new mine tunnel that was started in 1998. The specimen was hardly out of the ground before it became the focus of very spirited bidding battles by a number of interested dealers. It was acquired by Collectors Edge and subsequently sold to sound-track composer: James Horner of Titanic fame. Three years later, Daniel Trinchillo Jr. acquired it in a trade from Horner. It was then sold to New York collector Marc Weill in 2003. It remained in the Weill Collection for two years before Daniel Trinchillo Sr. managed to persuade Mr. Weill to sell it to him. The specimen is composed of three major Tourmaline crystals; all with flat terminations. The largest crystal is 6 3/8 inches in length with the others measuring 5 ½ and 4 ½ inches respectively. Each crystal exits in the matrix at a different angle contributing a 'jack-straw' appearance to the overall arrangement. All of the Tourmaline prisms start out with a pink basal section which abruptly shifts to pastel blue for a few inches before terminating in a final cap of cranberry-red Tourmaline. The matrix is made up of Lepidolite mica of a lilac hue along with white, bladed crystals of Clevelandite. Here and there, an occasional water clear Quartz crystal is hidden among the Lepidolite crystals. The overall height of 'Ms. Stone' is just under 7 inches without the base. There are some inconspicuous repairs to the piece but nothing out of the ordinary for material from this locality. Overall dimensions are 4 ½ x 5 ½ x 6 ½ inches. Ex Marc Weill collection, ex James Horner collection.

Fossils
LARGE IRIDESCENT FOSSIL AMMONITE
Peltocertoides sp., Ulyanovsk, Russia, Lower Cretaceous
When Daniel Jr. was traveling through Russia he stopped in Ulyanovsk, a city on the Volga River and the birthplace of Vladimir Lenin. Located 893 km east of Moscow, it is a renowned fossil locality. Although he was searching for mineral specimens, he also knew that this was a locality for unusual fossil ammonites. While he was there, he watched fossil diggers uncover this fine specimen. When he returned to the U.S., Daniel Sr. obtained the ammonite from him; one of the few fossils ever to be added to his collection. The ammonite is large for the species and has a significant amount of original nacre - with flashing highlights of pink and purple on pearlescent white and cream. At the time of its discovery, it was one of the largest and finest of its type, as most specimens from the area are measurably smaller. The ammonite is in excellent and original condition, never having been prepared or restored. The overall diameter is 11 x 12 inches and it is 3 inches thick. It sits upright on a custom acrylic base.
