Jefferson Davis 1/9th Plate Ambrotype in Case.
President of the Confederate States of America. Pierce's Secretary of War and a Mississippi Senator, he left Congress after secession. He was elected President of the Confederate States of America, and circumstances made him more autocratic as the Civil War progressed. After the war, he was captured and imprisoned for two years. Never tried for treason, he was released and wrote
The Rise and Fall of the Confederate Government.
This ambrotype is of an early engraving made of the Confederate leader. His face is youthful, and he has no beard. His cheeks have been tinted rose, and the stippling from the engraving is especially visible on his jacket. The ambro has been placed into a brass frame and a leatherette case. The photograph itself is in very fine condition; minimal scratches; one minor scratch in the upper portion near the edge. The case is in fine condition; the hinges have separated; clasp still intact; moderate leather rubbing and wear on all sides.
From the Stanley King collection.

George B. McClellan 1/9th Plate Ambrotype in Case.
A larger-than-life figure to be sure, "Little Mac" was one of the most celebrated and controversial generals during and after the Civil War. His conciliatory attitude towards the South did not earn him many fans during Reconstruction, and his reputation in many circles has suffered over the past 100 years. However, most serious Civil War scholars believe that he is criticized more for his personality and opinions than his military tactics and field action. Apart from this, McClellan was an instrumental man and officer in the Union effort, and this lot features a gorgeous ambrotype of the man himself! This very choice photograph displays McClellan in his Union blues; the double-breasted frock coat, always a constant with Little Mac, is all we can see in this bust shot. His iconic mustache and pensive glance are present! The delicate ambrotype is housed in a brass frame with a patriotic motif embossed on it, as well as the phrase "The Union Now And Forever". Implements of war and American flags drape this monumental general's portrait. The ambro and frame have been placed in a leatherette case with a satin lining. The photograph itself is in very fine condition; light sickness on the front glass (could be easily cleaned); no major scratches or blemishes; frame is lightly tarnished in areas of low relief. The case is also in very fine condition; light rubbing of the leather in corners and edge; hinges and clasp still functional.
