Description:
Robert R. Livingston (1746-1813) Judge, Drafter of the Declaration of Independence, Autograph Endorsement Signed, "R R Livingston", one page, 7" x 9.5", Philadelphia, March 3, 1783 written at the bottom of a manuscript petition in another hand in which Jane Cuyler requests: "...That your Petitioner was formerly an Inhabitant of New York from whence she went to Charles Town On the enemies [sic] taking Possession of that place your Petitioner was obliged to leave it with a Family of four children & she has suffer'd [sic] numberless inconveniences since - Your Petitioner has some Property in New York where she wishes to go, & for which purpose she begs your Permission - If you shoul'd [sic] be pleas'd [sic] to indulge her with a Pass the favor will be held in grateful remembrance..." Livingston subsequently certifies ...that Mrs. Cuyler was a long time an inhabitant of New York and that her late husband's family possessed a considerable property there..." At the time, New York was still occupied by British Forces who captured the city in 1776. They did not leave New York until November 25, 1783 when news of the final peace treaty arrived in America. Jane Cuyler may have been a member of the prominent Dutch New York family Corlear, and this is merely a misspelling. Extremely light creases, very light foxing, else Fine. A great, early document. From the Henry E. Luhrs Collection. Accompanied by LOA from PSA/DNA.
