Description

[John S. "Rip" Ford]. Half-Plate Ambrotype Featuring Five Armed Men, circa 1858-1860. An oval image approximately 4.75" x 3.5" (case is 6" x 5"). These well-armed men, believed to be some of Rip Ford's Texas Rangers, wear clothing identifying them as frontiersmen in the late 1850s. The slumbering dog in the center appears oblivious to the knives, pistols, and rifles carried by the men. Original leather-embossed case lined with embossed velvet; minor wear. Hinges and clasps in fine operating condition. Light surface abrasions in no way detract from this striking image that is rich in detail and contrast. It is believed that this image was taken by the same photographer as that of the Rip Ford ambrotype listed in this auction as lot 44141.
