Description:
John F. Kennedy: Large Archive of Assassination Teletypes. The Kennedy assassination and its aftermath are reported as they happened in this extensive archive of UPI teletypes. They were collected by the father of a cousin of the consignor who was serving in the U. S. Army at a radio receiving station in Middletown, California. There are twelve rolls of reports ranging in length from less than a foot to dozens of feet. We have not examined each and every one, nor measured them, so cannot give a total footage. Suffice it to say that the grouping is extensive. In no particular order, we note a roll that deals with the arrest of Jack Ruby, his roommate, the Kennedy funeral procession and observances at Westminster Abbey. A 12" report marked "Urgent" declares: "President Kennedy Has Been Assassinated. A single shot through the right temple took the life of the 46-year-old chief executive." As is all-too-typical in these tragic events, early reports often contained erroneous information. A group of reports from November 24th describe efforts at Parkland Hospital to save Oswald's life, including messaging the heart and installing a pacemaker. Reports from November 23rd declare: "Lee Harvey Oswald, the man charged with murdering President Kennedy, was shot today in the basement of City Hall and rushed, writhing in pain on a stretcher, to the same emergency surgery ward where the president died." In what may be the first report of the assassination, labeled "Urgent, 1st and 2nd lead", we read: "The President, cradled in his wife's arms, had been rushed in his blood-splattered limousine to Parkland Hospital and taken to an emergency room. An urgent call went out for neurosurgeons and blood. The President, 44 years old, was shot once in the head." This is an historic lot.
