Description:
William Henry Harrison: Outstanding Campaign Snuff Box. The Hero of Tippecanoe is clearly recognizable on this iconic papier-mâché snuff box from the election of 1840. The engraved lid shows two soldiers, one an amputee, greeting the Whig candidate who extends one hand in friendship while grasping a plow with the other. His rustic log cabin appears in a wooded setting with two barrels of hard cider alongside. The American flag flies in the distance and a canoe with passengers sails on the river. This bit of classic campaign iconography appears on many ribbons and pieces of ephemera, but Harrison is usually not recognizable. There is no questioning his identity on this 3 1/4" box. The image is an orange color with a thin line of yellow for a border. The color combination is quite appealing. There is some scattered loss, as shown, but these occur in unimportant sections of the design. The bottom half of the box has some chipping to the edges, of no consequence. There are no repairs, restoration or crazing.
