Description:
Confederate Oath of Allegiance from the State of Missouri. One page, 4.5" x 7.5", Springfield, December 21, 1861. Authorized by R. W. Donnell. The oath reads in full:

"You, A. B., do solemnly swear, [or affirm.] that you will bear true allegiance to the State of Missouri and the Confederate States of America, and that you will serve them honestly and faithfully against all their enemies or opposers whatsoever, and observe and obey the orders of the Governor of Missouri and the President of the Confederate States of America, and the orders of the Officers appointed over you, according to the rules and articles for the government of the armies of the State of Missouri and the Confederate States for ---------. So help you God."

Despite popular support for the Confederacy during the Civil War, Missouri remained a member of the Union. Pieces of Missouri Confederate history are uncommon and this is the only Confederate oath of allegiance known to exist from that state. This is a must have for any collector of Civil War memorabilia.

Toned with fold creases, which are weak and broken in places. Mirror stain of signature from folding, but does not hinder the text. Very fine condition.
