Description:
Space Shuttle Main Engine Contractor's Model. A massive, detailed metal model of the RS-25 engine on a 13.5" diameter wooden base. The engine itself measures 7" diameter at the bottom x 12.5" tall. There is an engraved plate on the base: "1/12 Scale SSME/ Space Shuttle/ Main Engine/ Rocketdyne Rockwell Int." Underneath the base is a handwritten label with the text: "Presented to James R. Thompson, Jr. by James M. Galbreath" along with others. Thompson served as director of NASA's Marshall Manned Spaceflight Center from 1986-1989, and later as NASA's deputy director. His work on this very engine design won him a NASA Medal for Distinguished Service in 1981. Three of these type engines were mounted at the aft of each Space Shuttle orbiter. Very displayable. Fine condition save for a loose piece that could easily be repaired.
