Description:
Apollo 17 Flown Silver Robbins Medallion Directly from the Personal Collection of Astronaut William Pogue, Serial Number F19, with Signed LOA. This 35mm sterling silver medal was one of only eighty flown aboard Apollo 17, December 7-19, 1972, with crewmembers Gene Cernan, Ron Evans, and Harrison Schmitt. A total of 300 were minted to commemorate this sixth and final lunar landing of the NASA program. The obverse features the mission insignia depicting the head of the Greek god Apollo, a U.S. flag and eagle, the moon, and the surnames of crewmembers. The mission dates are engraved on the reverse with the phrase "The Beginning". The serial number and sterling and Robbins hallmarks are on the rim. This is the rarest of all Apollo silver Robbins medallions and this one comes in its original case with pad and numbered sticker. Excellent condition.

Included with this lot is a handwritten and signed letter from Pogue regarding his memories of Apollo 17. It was received too late to be included in the printed catalog. The content is transcribed below (see last image):

"The last flight to the moon was crewed by Gene Cernan, Ron Evans and Harrison H. (Jack) Schmitt. Ron and I were in the same selection group (5th group of astronauts) so I knew him well and had served on the support crews for Apollo 7 and 11. Jack and I played a lot of handball together and he was really good. I never beat him. Gene Cernan and I worked on Apollo 7 (Gene was on the back-up crew). At first Gene was 'ticked off' to be referred to as 'the last man to walk on the moon,' but it was an historical fact so he finally accepted his 'notoriety.'

"Apollo 17 returned to Earth in December 1972 while those of us waiting to fly on Skylab watched with pride. NASA managers breathed a big sigh of relief. Many were so afraid that we would leave a crew on the moon. A lot of managerial ulcers disappeared with the successful return of Apollo 17.

"Bill Pogue, Pilot Skylab 4/ 10/08/12" Estimate: .
