Description:
One of only ninety-eight flown on Apollo 16.
Apollo 16 Flown Silver Robbins Medallion Presented to Astronaut Tom Stafford by Mission Commander John Young, Serial Number 89, with LOA from Tom Stafford. This 35mm diameter sterling silver medal is one of only ninety-eight (of a total mintage of 300) flown aboard Apollo 16, April 16-27, 1972, the fifth manned mission to land on the moon, along with crewmembers Young, Mattingly, and Duke. The obverse features the mission insignia, an eagle and shield above the moon with the surnames of the crewmembers. The reverse features the engraved dates of the launch, landing, and return. The serial number is on the rim along with the sterling and Robbins hallmarks. Particularly desirable as it originated from the commander of the mission who presented it to his Apollo 10 crewmate, Tom Stafford. Excellent condition.

Included with this lot is a signed Letter of Authenticity on Stafford's letterhead stating, in full:

"This medallion was presented to me by Apollo 16 Commander John Young while I was Deputy Director of Flight Crew Operations at the Manned Spacecraft Center. Apollo 16 was the fifth manned lunar landing and the second to use the lunar rover. The flight was the first to land in the highland regions of the Moon.

"This medallion is one of the Robbins series of Apollo medallions made during the Apollo Program. Only serial numbers 1 to 98 were flown on the Apollo 16 mission, with the unflown medallions never receiving a serial number. This medallion is serial number 89.

"The medallion has been in my private collection since 1972. The Apollo 16 mission emblem is on the front of the medallion with the mission launch, lunar landing, and return dates engraved on the back. [signed] Thomas P. Stafford/ Thomas P. Stafford/ Lt. General, USAF, (Ret.)/ Gemini and Apollo Astronaut" Estimate: .
