Description:
Famous Eagle mission insignia flown to the moon on Apollo 11.
Apollo 11 Flown Beta Cloth Mission Insignia Directly from the Personal Collection of Mission Command Module Pilot Michael Collins, Signed and Certified. A 6" x 6" swatch of Beta cloth with the famous Eagle-landing mission emblem above which Collins has written: "Carried to the Moon aboard Apollo XI/ July 1969". Beneath are the signatures of the crew from this monumental mission: "Neil Armstrong", "Michael Collins", and "Buzz Aldrin". Collins was the designer of the original Apollo 11 insignia though his original concept was modified a bit by NASA. His concept had the eagle carrying an olive branch in its mouth. NASA thought the sharp, open talons of the eagle looked too "warlike" and the olive branch, representing peace, was moved to the claws. Is there anyone alive in 1969 that doesn't remember feeling an strong emotional impact when Neil Armstrong said to Mission Control, "Houston, Tranquility Base here. The Eagle has landed"? A wonderful relic of man's first landing on the moon. Excellent condition but with some minor fraying around the edges.
