Description:
Apollo 1 Crew-Signed Color NASA Glossy Photo with Silver-Colored Apollo 1 Fliteline Medallion in a Framed Display, both Originally from the Personal Collection of Mission Commander Gus Grissom, with LOA from Betty Grissom. A 9" x 6.75" (sight size) photo [NASA image S-66-30236]. It pictures the astronauts posed in their flight suits at a table behind a model of the original CM-012 command module. It is boldly signed by each in black felt tip: "Ed White" (1930-1967), "Gus Grissom" (1926-1967), and "Roger Chaffee" (1935-1967). It is handsomely matted and framed to an overall 13.75" x 14.25" along with an Apollo 1 silver-colored Fliteline medallion. This 31mm medal features the mission insignia on the obverse depicting a command/service module flying over the southeastern United States. The moon is in the distance, symbolizing the program's eventual goal. Obviously, this Apollo 1 Fliteline never flew, but it was prepared to go on the first Apollo mission with Grissom, White, and Chaffee. Very desirable coming from the Grissom family. Excellent condition overall. The photo is pristine; the medal has some general light corrosion.

Originally designated AS-204, the first mission in the Apollo manned lunar landing program was scheduled for launch on February 21, 1967. A tragic fire during a "plugs-out" launch simulation on January 27, 1967, claimed the lives of the three astronauts aboard. This led to a complete re-design of the Apollo command/ service module. It was not until Apollo 7, October 11-22, 1969, before the first American three-man mission took place.

Included with this lot is a signed Letter of Authenticity on Mrs. Grissom's letterhead stating, in full: "June 11, 1995. This is to certify that Lot #17 - Virgil Grissom's Apollo 1 signed photo and medallion came from my personal collection."
