Description:
The 1505 Greek-Only Edition of Aesop Printed by Aldus Manutius
Aesop. Vita et Fabellae Aesopi...Gabriae Fabellae...Collectio Proverbiorum Tarrhaei &c. [Venice]: Aldus Manutius, [1505]. First Aldine edition, in Greek only. Folio (27.5 x 17.5 cm): a-h^8 i^6 Χ^8 Λ^8 Μ^8 Ν^8 Ξ^8 Ο^4; 114 leaves. Full early limp vellum. Woodcut of the famous dolphin and anchor device to first and last leaves. Some edge wear, rubbing and light staining to covers. Hinges a bit tender at the upper gutters. A few small holes to front free endpaper. Black ink library stamp below dolphin and anchor device on A1r obscured. Early marginalia to a good number of leaves. Minor scattered foxing. An excellent copy of the very rare Greek-only Aldine edition of Aesop, which Dibdin described as "among the rarer and more beautiful productions of the Aldine Press." Further, Quaritch's Aldine Collection catalog of 1929 calls this edition "VERY RARE. It is extremely difficult to obtain a fine copy of this book."
