Entered into the record By Jonathan Bayard Smith, Prothonotary of the Court of common Pleas of Philadelphia County. J. B. Smith was a member of the Continental Congress and a signer of the Articles of Confederation.

This is the first appearance of a new hymnal, authorized by the Lutheran Synod. "The preface, signed by twenty-five members of the Ministerium, written by Muhlenberg, its senior member, states the reasons which guided him in the selection of hymns; and alludes to his forty-four years of 'toilsome pilgrimage' in the Western Continent" (Evans, American Bibliography).

Evans 19628, 22495.
