Description:
One of the Great American State Papers, Establishing the Honor and Credit of the United States
Alexander Hamilton. Report of the Secretary of the Treasury to the House of Representatives Relative to a Provision for the Support of the Public Credit of the United States...Presented to the House on Thursday, the 14th Day of January 1790. New York: Francis Childs and John Swaine, 1790. Folio. 51 pages. Untrimmed, in original side-sewn blue-gray wrappers, which show moderate chipping. Inked name with date on rear wrapper: "William Imlay December 1, 1800." In custom half morocco box. Very good.

"One of the great American state papers, being the first report on public credit. In it Hamilton recommends that the U.S. pay all its war debts, at par value, as well as assume all war debts of the states, thereby establishing both in domestic and foreign circles the honor and credit of the United States. He also presents here for the first time his ideas and plans for a strong central government. By this document the federalist philosophy of American government began, and on or against its principles every statesman for a hundred years based his political career" (Jenkins).

Church 1253. Evans 22998. Jenkins, Early American Imprints I - 186.
