Description:
Two Civil War Period or Earlier Portable Writing Desks, C. 1840 - 1860. The smaller 13 1/2" X 9" X 4 1/8" high and constructed of walnut. Brass key escutcheon and lid escutcheon which is engraved with three script initials. Excellent overall condition with the leather writing surface having been nicely restored. Complete with two period glass inkwells. The larger 19 7/8" X 9 3/4" X 6 3/4" constructed of veneered mahogany. Overall excellent condition with just a couple of cracks in the veneer with no loss. The interior leather writing surface nicely restored and includes three period glass inkwells, one with a hinged brass top, another with a hinged cut glass top. Fitted with brass bail handles, the one on the right broken but present, and a slide out drawer on the left side which is held in place by a brass locking pin. Both examples with nice rich patina and typical of the writing desks carried into the field by officers in both the Mexican and Civil Wars.
