Description:
Apollo 11 Limited Edition Medal with Original Letter of Transmittal. A heavy and impressive 64mm stainless steel medallion. On the obverse is the Apollo Program logo and the text: "Lunar Landing/ Apollo/ NASA/ July 1969". On the reverse are the facsimile signatures of the crew and the statement: "The Die for this Medallion was Carried to the Moon and Back by the Crew of Apollo 11 in 1969." The accompanying letter, addressed to Richard C. Proffitt is dated July 16, 1974 and is signed by Kennedy Space Center Director "Kurt H. Debus". It reads, in part: "A limited number of stainless steel medallions were made in commemoration of the first lunar landing mission. A special die was flown on Apollo 11 and was then utilized to fabricate the medallions. Medallions are being presented to those KSC employees who have previously been recognized by a NASA honorary award or a top-level KSC award for their outstanding contributions to the Apollo Program." Proffitt had previously received the NASA Exceptional Service Medal. The medallion is in excellent condition; the letter has some light wear and mailing folds. From the estate of NASA engineer Richard C. Proffitt, Launch Complex 39 Operations Manager from 1969 to 1976.
