Description:
Martin Van Buren: Extremely Rare Wooden Case containing Rouge (Make-Up) with His Portrait in Relief. Almost certainly made in Europe for the American market, this is an item we have never seen before for any president or candidate, let alone one as tough as Van Buren. Apparently the maker took an impression from a U.S. mint medal issued to celebrate Van Buren's 1837 inauguration, and made a mold to impress the design into a bar of rouge. The relief is a roughly comparable to what would be seen on the medal. Of course as a woman rubbed a powder puff on the surface, Van Buren's image would be quickly obliterated. But this example is in virtually mint, unused condition. Set into an attractive lidded walnut case, the 1830s version of a modern lady's compact. Great display appeal as a three-dimensional item, but it is also thin enough to be displayed inside a Riker mount alongside other small Van Buren pieces. A very special collector's item, especially for this sought-after President. Diameter 2.375".
