Description:
Fine condition U.S. M1863 Type II .58 Caliber Springfield Percussion Rifled Musket, Springfield / 1864, with Attached Silver Plaque Identifying the Gun to Congressional Medal of Honor Winner Abraham Greenawalt, Co. G 104th Ohio Vol. Inf. The gun is in very fine untouched condition. All metal smooth and gray, with excellent markings including 1864 breech date and eagle on the face of the bolster. Mechanically crisp, fine bore, complete and original in every respect. Wood also excellent with nice smooth dark patina, showing just some honest use, with both inspectors' cartouches very good. "E. L. J." is neatly carved on the left side of the butt stock in a 1" x 3" panel. Exact significance unknown but logically the owner of the gun prior to it being issued to Greenawalt. Neatly applied to the right side of the butt stock is a 2.75" x 3.375" silver shield with decoratively engraved border and "Abraham / Greenawalt" engraved in script at the top. Shield shows obvious wear and unquestionably authentic and indigenous to the gun. The gun is accompanied by the original brown leather sling, and bayonet and scabbard, all in fine condition.

Greenawalt enlisted in the 104th Ohio August 7, 1862, and served with the regiment till muster out on June 17, 1865. During his term of service the regiment was engaged through Tennessee and subsequent operations in Georgia including Resaca, Kenesaw, and Atlanta, with Greenawalt being slightly wounded at Utoy Creek, Georgia on August 6, 1864. On November 30, the 104th Ohio bore the brunt of the Confederate assault on the Federal line, during the conflagration that would be known as the Battle of Franklin, Tennessee. Greenawalt, along with other members of the regiment, poured over the Federal parapet, meeting the Confederate attackers head on, in vicious hand to hand combat. As the Federals turned back the Confederate assault, Greenawalt captured, what is identified in records as a "Confederate Corps Headquarters Flag" for which he was awarded the Medal of Honor, on February 6, 1865.

A superbly identified Civil War musket, that was "fired in anger" at one of the most viciously contested combat actions of the the entire American Civil War. Estimate: .
