Description:
John Tyler: Absolutely Stunning, Superb Portrait Brooch Pin. Measures 3/4" - 1". Immediately recognizable, hand-colored litho portrait under beveled glass, with beautiful filigreed gilt metal frame. Original pin on reverse is similar to those seen on the familiar sulfide pins. Condition is just beautiful as well, simply no negatives on this important item. Tyler items are prohibitively rare!

Sullivan pictures a pewter-rim, which he dates to 1844, (presumably suggesting it was an 1844 "hopeful" item, as this beautiful brooch may well have been). He also pictures a star-shaped badge, clearly an 1844 item because of the Texas connection (but we've never seen that offered), and lists (but is unable to picture) two clothing buttons. There is a silk portrait ribbon of Tyler as president, of which perhaps six to eight copies are known. We know of only one other Tyler portrait brooch, of a completely different variety. Attractive appearance, rarity and importance make this unique item a "must" for the sophisticated collector! This item was purchased in an April 25, 2004 Slater's Americana auction, where it drew fierce bidding and ultimately sold for $17,603. From the Edward C. Gillette Collection.
