1839 Colton Pocket Map Complete with Text

[Map]. Richard S. Hunt and Jesse F. Randel. Guide to the Republic of Texas: Consisting of a Brief Outline of the History of its Settlement, A General View of the Surface of the Country; It's Climate, Soils, Productions...Accompanied by a New and Improved Map. New York: J. H. Colton, 1839. 16mo, sixty-three pages, plus advertisement leaf. Original green, blind stamped cloth with gilt titles. Scattered foxing; light toning. Worn and soiled boards are bowed out slightly; water damage to the bottom of the rear board extending around to the spine.

With Map of Texas, Compiled from Surveys on Record in the General Land Office of the Republic to the year 1839. Measures 24.25" x 32". engraved by Stiles, Sherman, & Smith of New York, on onion skin paper. In original full, hand-color. Inset at lower right Map of the Rio Grande and the Country West to the Pacific. Locations of the original Texas colonies and early county configurations are presented along with geographic features and locations of settlements and Indian groups. Folds are weak in places causing minor separation at places along the horizontal folds and at the intersections with some of the vertical folds. Spots of staining (from water damage to boards) along the left vertical fold and at other places along the folds in the bottom half; small spot at lower right corner and upper left edge. The guide is usually found without the map, making this an extraordinary find!

According to Streeter: "The first general guide to Texas...It must have been a useful book for intending settlers, and its contemporary account of existing conditions makes it a valuable book now. The map is important.... It shows, probably for the first time, the newly laid out town of Austin on the north bank of the Colorado."
