Description
Important Gough Engraved Colt Government Model 1911 Semi-Automatic Pistol Shipped to Colt President C.L.F.Robinson. Serial no. C7198, .45 caliber, 5-inch barrel. Blued finish. Extensively floral engraved by William Gough. Coverage is near complete and includes fine work on trigger, safety catch and slide stop. Beautiful vine borders around patent dates, address and model designation. Shipped to Col. C.L.F. Robinson on July 17, 1914. Sold together with a Colt Factory letter confirming current configuration, Gough engraving and Robinson ownership. Also sold together with period brown leather flap holster marked "T.R." and embellished with floral carving. Charles Leonard Frost Robinson was related to the Colt family by his marriage,in June 1898, to Mrs. Colt's niece, Elizabeth Hart Jarvis Beach. Born July 9, 1874,
Robinson was an investment banker, with positions in insurance, banking and railroading. He served as President of the Colt Company from 1911 until 1916. This is the first time that this gun has been offered at auction.
Condition: Very good to fine. Retaining approximately 50-60% blued finish with edge wear. Some fading on gripstraps and triggerguard. . Grips are modern replacements. Bright strong bore with fine pitting.
Colt master engraver William H. Gough was active between 1912 and 1940. Gough also engraved guns for Winchester, Parker and Remington. His work is considered among the best of the period. According to "The Colt Engraving Book" author R.L.Wilson this is the best example of Gough's engraving that he has seen. (See Volume II of this work for reference) This gun is also listed on page 256 of Goddard's "The Government Model ."
